1/5 – Roots

James Wong focuses on what he considers the unsung heroes of the plant world – roots. Using valerian, ginger and marshmallow he creates tasty treats to help combat stress, soothe coughs and relieve nausea and reveals the traditional uses of echinacea to fight off infection.

This truly is a fascinating and educational program and everyone should watch it – you’re guaranteed to learn something useful.  For instance, who knew that the marshmallows you buy in the shops are coloured white and pink because the marshmallow plant flowers are white and pink!  Admittedly we don’t use marshmallow plants in our marshmallows now but the substance he extracted from the plant does look very similar to the liquid glucose I use when making marshmallows.  See – fascinating!

Valerian I already use, I have a bottle of pure herbal extract of valerian that I use sometimes and also let the cats have some, as they seem to like it also – a bit like the plant of course.  It’s quite thick and gloopy and I can’t really describe what it tastes like except that it’s quite sweet and I like it.

I definitely need to get some echinacea for the garden.  My neighbour has these mad flowers that grow really tall for months on end and they look a bit like echinacea except they are yellow.  She did think they were echinacea but I think they might be from the same family or something.  I use echinacea tincture regularly and especially when I feel like I might be getting a cold, seems to work.

I loved watching him with the ginger.  That’s really interesting to see how they make crystallised ginger, who knew it was so easy.  I guess I can stop buying it in little jars now, which is good because the supermarket used to stock the stuff from Buderim QLD but now only seem to sell the asian stuff.  That’s fine but I wanted to support the Buderim ginger factory since I’ve been there and know it’s good, and it’s such a small place, it’s probably about the only industry they have!
