Nigel Slater has a new series in conjunction with the BBC Dig In campaign.  It’s called Simple Suppers and episode one was on tonight.  I love Nigel Slater and this was a great show, not least because it was set in his kitchen and garden so we get to have a nosey about, but also because it is associated with the Dig In campaign, and features lots of vegetables and people growing vegetables, fruit etc.

(Also I checked on amazon and there’s a new book coming out called Tender V.1 A Cook and his Vegetable Patch *squee*)

Episode 1: Making it Up isn’t Making Do

Food writer Nigel Slater creates a week’s worth of simple yet delicious meals, using everyday ingredients to rustle up sumptuous food that is both inspiring and achievable. Nigel encourages us to experiment in the kitchen and have the confidence to make dishes up as we go along. He also visits local allotment holders and creates a tasty feast from the fruits of their labour. The series is part of the BBC Dig-In campaign.

Nigel said he wasn’t envious of other people’s houses or cars etc but he was very envious of other people’s allotments, just the idea of having that much space to be able to grow whatever you wanted to.  I know he wouldn’t be envious of my garden lol well perhaps the size of it but definitely not the garden in it’s current condition, though I have to admit it is showing some promise now at least.   He visited an allotment which was on a flight path somewhere, could have been near Heathrow, not sure.  And then he took a selection of veg from their allotment and whisked up something tasty.  They even had a black and white cat but not as pretty as Wombat.  Lol they used a giant marrow that used to be a zucchine (courgette) but kinda went wild.  Ah the joys of  “chucking something in a pan”.  I told my sister about this program as I think she would enjoy it too.

Ah Nigel you love garlic as much as I do!  I love it roasted, it’s always a feature in Australian baked dinners, and I tended to always ignore the roasted meat and pig out on the roasted veg – roasted onions, pumpkin, potatoes, sweet potatoes, garlic *swoon*  They visit a garlic farm on the Isle of Wight and wow the size of the elephant garlic, I am definitely going to grow some of that, although it seems to be more of a leek than a true garlic.
