Every now and then, actually usually at this time of the year, I ask myself if I could be a vegan. Now to all you meat eaters that might sound shocking but since I’m already vegetarian, it’s not so shocking as it just means giving up dairy. It does mean that my diet would be even more restrictive, eating out or with family would be difficult (for them to cook vegan) and I really love cheese! I have tried several times to be vegan and I always end up missing cheese. Last year I ordered some very expensive vegan cheese that got great reviews but it was disgusting and I had to throw it out, so now here I am at this time of year again, wondering if I could give being vegan another try.
Some initial thoughts: I drink soya milk anyway so I wouldn’t miss milk except in coffee because soya milk curdles in coffee but is fine in tea! (I would have to investigate a substitute that didn’t curdle)
I don’t like cream
I already eat vegan dairy-free spread instead of butter or marg
I really love natural yogurt I really love all kinds of cheese
I don’t like eggs very much but eat them if they’re in things like cakes etc
So really if I could get over missing cheese and yogurt and drink black coffee I think I could do it. Looking at the above list it doesn’t sound so bad but of course most chocolate contains dairy so could I give up chocolate? (of course not, but there are some good vegan chocolate alternatives around) Anyway, there are no fat vegans around (?), so I’m thinking it’s worth another attempt. More later…
