Hello supermarkets, correct me if I’m wrong but we are right slap bang in the middle of the British asparagus season, right?  I know mine is certainly growing in my back yard, so why are we STILL only being offered asparagus from Peru???

I am buying the imported asparagus but only because I adore asparagus and find it hard to resist, but each week I check the label in Tesco and each week it says Peru.  So where is all the British asparagus?  Are we exporting it to Peru perhaps?

I checked on the British Asparagus site and there are growers in 35 counties, but when you look at outlets to buy asparagus, we have farm shops, pick your own or mail order.  No supermarkets.  Why is this so?  Are the supermarkets not buying? Are the growers not supplying? Is there not enough to supply a supermarket chain? Or is it cheaper to get it from Peru?  British asparagus season goes from May-June so why is there no British asparagus in my local supermarket?

Please tell me because I really want to know.

(Next year I will be able to pick my own from my own back yard! woo hoo)
