right so, I read in Grow your Own Drugs that you can grow watercress in a bowl of water in your kitchen.  Watercress was/is one of my favourite vegetables and one that I wanted to grow in the garden but I think it might be a bit tricky.  I also saw on the show that if you get it in the wild then you might also get liver fluke along with it!

I decided to give it a go last Thursday and bought a bag of watercress in Tesco.

The ingredients were:

a glass bowl

some pebbles

some spring water

bag of supermarket watercress

I was wondering where I was going to get a big glass bowl but given that I never throw anything out I found a big clear plastic bowl in the dresser.  I completely forgot I even owned something like that and I don’t think it’s ever been used.  It’s from IKEA, label still on the bottom.  Also from IKEA years ago are the glass pebbles I decided to use.  It pays to never throw anything away!

watercress experimentI bought evian along with the bag of watercress as I reckoned I should give them a good start.

watercressThen a few days later – not sure how many as I wasn’t paying close attention – they start to perk up and look less wilty.  I planted them on Thursday 10th and by Sunday 13th there were roots!  As I said, I didn’t check for roots before today so they may have started earlier, but look how long they are already!

watercressThat’s really impressive!  Now I wait for it to start growing bigger and in six weeks I clean out the bowl and start over with whatever’s still growing.  Fantastic!
