Last Sunday, I conducted a little experiment. I have a sprouter for sprouting seeds like mung beans (of course!) and alfalfa etc, but I was wondering to myself what would happen if I put squash and courgette seeds in it. They seem to take an age to come to anything in the greenhouse so what would happen if I stuck them in the sprouter on the kitchen windowsill. Average sprouting time is 3 days.
I was a little late in taking a photo of this but here it is a week after putting them in the sprouter:
What I planted was:
butternut squash – nothing as yet
sweet sugar squash – results
cucumber gerkin – results
zucchini F1 – nothing as yet
cucumber crystal lemon – results
courgette tondo di nizza – results
patty pan squash – results
zucchini (bush) – results
vegetable spaghetti – nothing as yet
I have now potted up all the ones that have sprouted so far and put them in the greenhouse. As this is an experiment I want to see if they will take or not and if they do then I will do this again. I was wondering why no one else has mentioned doing this before as it seemed very successful and quick to get germination and small seedlings emerging, but maybe no one does it because they can’t hack the transfer to a pot or garden or maybe because the seedlings aren’t exactly growing straight up, which I hope will be quickly rectified once they get with the program, or maybe not many people have sprouters or are as impatient as me. Maybe they’re just happy to wait the designated time. I was just sick of checking my greenhouse seedlings and seeing nothing so I thought I would switch to Plan B – experimentation.
Anyway only time will tell whether they will continue to grow or not but so far so good.
