I have swine flu apparently and three feet of snow outside so it’s hard to think positive and do the usual thing I do at this time of the year – looking back at the good things that have happened in the last 12 months and looking ahead and making resolutions for this year.  In fact, I can hardly stop coughing long enough to take a breath and my head is so fuzzy I can’t think straight but in the middle of all of this when I was feeling miserable, I tried to think of three good things that happened in the garden last year.

I actually came up with five:

BIL finally took away all the old appliances and other junk that’s been cluttering up the patio since I moved here

Davy put up the fence at the bottom of the garden

Martin chopped about six feet off the leylandii with a chain saw

I dug up all the nettles that had taken over the bottom of the garden

BT finally (after three years) moved the low level phone lines that were hanging across my garden

You have no idea how much of a difference this makes to the garden and consequently to how I feel about the garden.  For starters I no longer hate it and hate going out there.  Gardens are like an extra room, an extension to your house and if you have that space and can’t use it then it’s a complete waste.  I have my space back now… of course it’s buried under three feet of snow at the moment and completely inaccessible but this is only a temporary thing (I hope)

It’s nice to start the year with something positive.  This is not the right time due to illness but I am thinking of giving veganism another try.  All previous attempts have failed due to lack of willpower and love of cheese but it’s something I want to do and not just for me.  I think if I look at the bigger picture instead of personal reasons then it might make a difference.
