So in November I bought some rhubarb crowns to plant in the garden, and they arrived just looking like a bunch of mis-shapen lumps of something. And I did wonder at the time how I was going to be able to work out which way up to plant them, then of course we got all the snow so the crowns have lived in my kitchen still inside their box, and now they have started growing, which makes sense because they’re in the dark and when people “force” rhubarb for an early crop they cover them with something. Now have rhubarb growing in my kitchen and now I can tell which way up it goes!
Now that the snow has gone I need to find time to go out and plant them in the garden before they get any bigger.
What hasn’t faired so well are the 30 strawberry plants that I bought at the same time and are also still in my kitchen for the same reason as the rhubarb. I keep watering them but there’s quite a few brown and crispy leaves so I’m hoping they will come good and I can get them in the garden soon too.
I also have a bunch of plants outside in pots that didn’t get planted before the snow and they don’t look so good either. I really hope they’re ok as they cost quite a bit of money and at the moment they look more like dead sticks in pots.
The bamboo I have in pots got completely flattened under the weight of the snow and I had to go out before xmas and rescue them, now they look ok again but I guess they are too delicate still to support too much snow and they just collapsed.
I feel a little more hopeful of making the garden prettier now that the phone lines have been moved and the giant hedge has been trimmed.
