Yesterday mum and I went to the opening of Whole Foods Market at Giffnock. As you know I’ve been waiting for this to open since I first saw the announcement back in Spring. This is the first one outside London and only the 6th one in the UK. There are 5 in London! WFM is an American chain so for those who don’t know what it is check out this link http://wholefoodsmarket.com/company/
After SCRAPING THE ICE off my car (!) I picked up mum and got up there just in time to see the end of the Red Hot Chilli Pipers before they finished their set. If it hadn’t been for the ice scraping and the congestion in the streets around the store we would have got there sooner.
The store looked great, a great range of produce by UK standards but they still have a wider range in the US, than can’t really be helped and for people who haven’t been in a US store, it will be the best they’ve seen and the best I’ve seen in the UK so far.
I took some photos but it was hard when things were so busy:
Let’s start with the most important lol
A whole stand dedicated to tofu products and part of mum’s head on the right! I really hope they continue to stock this full range as I’m worried that if it doesn’t sell as much as they want it to, then it may gradually become smaller and smaller till there is only one shelf. The supermarkets do this, let’s hope WFM do not!
Grind your own peanut, cashew and almond butter – yum yum
The bulk bins – all kinds of nuts, seeds, flours, beans, grains, spices and other dry products. Buy as much or as little as you like. Fill little bags like this:
Some of my bulk purchases – black beluga lentils, coconut chips
My favourite food! I could move into this store and live on avocados and be extremely happy 🙂
Fruit
More fruit
Heirloom tomatoes. I bought lots of these, I couldn’t resist.
Some of the lunch options including three types of bean chilli and some stir fried tofu – they also had fish and chips, and lots of curries, and soups etc, plus lots of cooked veggies and lots of salads, hummus etc I wanted to eat all the veggie stuff but I’m in the middle of a juice fast so no food for me!
coffee, juices, smoothies made to order
I had two juices when I was there as we sat down for a couple of hours and just relaxed and chatted to complete strangers. They seemed to be having some teething problems with the juicer or the juice order system or maybe both but I stood there for ages waiting for the juice to be done. But then when I went back for a second juice and coffee for mum, the same person was there serving and gave me my second juice for free since I had waited so long the first time 🙂 Thank you lovely barista lady!
These are Russet apples, one of my favourites and they come out at this time of year. The one on the left is one I bought in the supermarket last week. The one on the right is an organic one that bought from WFM yesterday. Can you spot the difference?
Heirloom tomatoes I bought yesterday
And I can’t forget about the tasty looking cakes and desserts
My purchases Lots of russian red kale and spinach sticking out the top lol. I also got my vegan vitamins D2 and B12, my faith in nature products that I usually have to order online, some herbal toothpaste, some tasty lentils, chipotle peppers and even some organic food for the cats (who loved it)
It’s been a long time coming but I’m just so happy they’re finally here!
